“Significance

In this article we report a large-scale chemical screen in adult Drosophila to find inhibitors of stem-cell–derived tumors. To our surprise, we found that some Food and Drug Administration-approved chemotherapy drugs have the dual property of reducing growth of stem-cell–derived tumors while also stimulating hyperproliferation of their wild-type counterparts. Since hyperproliferation is one of the hallmarks of cancer cells, this side effect could contribute to refueling the growth of the very tumors that these chemotherapeutics are intended to inhibit. We show that this side effect is driven by the evolutionarily conserved Janus kinase-signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK-STAT) inflammatory pathway, raising the possibility that the JAK-STAT pathway may also be activated in humans who are treated with some chemotherapeutics.”

“These results reveal an unanticipated side effect on stem cells that may contribute to tumor recurrence.”

misleading marketing with good intentions

What happens to your statistics when you count someone as cured, that never really had the disease in the first place?

There is a claim going around that breast cancer can be cured 95% of the time if caught early enough.  But, when is it too early?  When does the application of dangerous and damaging treatment for a suspicion of a possible cancer become a greater risk to life and limb for women who’s test results were false positives, or would have stabilized on their own?

This is a tough question. One that each individual should be empowered to make on their own.  The following article is a good discussion on the misleading claims of the Komen Foundation about the benefits of mammograms.  I look forward to our discussion on this sensitive issue.

Cancer-killing dandelion tea gets $157K research grant

His team’s first phase of research showed that dandelion root extract forced a very aggressive and drug-resistant type of blood cancer cell, known as chronic monocytic myeloid leukemia, to essentially commit suicide.

Researchers then discovered that repeated treatment with low dose dandelion root extract was effective in killing most of the cancerous cells.

Cinnamon and Honey; Whoever thought?

Cinnamon and Honey; Whoever thought?

original article

This is what my family had for breakfast this morning.  Honey and cinnamon on wholewheat toast.

Honey is the only food on the planet that will not spoil or rot. What it will do is what some call ‘turning to sugar’. In reality, honey is always honey. However, when left in a cool dark place for a long time it will “crystallize”. When this happens loosen the lid, boil some water and sit the honey container in the hot water, but turn off the heat and let it liquefy naturally. It is then as good as it ever was. Never boil honey or put it in a microwave. This will kill the enzymes in the honey.

Cinnamon and Honey

Bet the drug companies won’t like this one getting around. Facts on Honey and Cinnamon: It is found that a mixture of honey and Cinnamon cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also accept honey as a ‘Ram Ban’ (very effective) medicine for all kinds of diseases. Honey can be used without side effects for any kind of diseases.
Today’s science says that even though honey is sweet, when it is taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm even diabetic patients. Weekly World News, a magazine in Canada, in its issue dated 17 January,1995 has given the following list of diseases that can be cured by honey and cinnamon, as researched by western scientists:

HEART DISEASES: Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply it on bread instead of jelly and jam and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also, those who have already had an attack, when they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heart beat. In America and Canada, various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as one ages the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalize the arteries and the veins.

ARTHRITIS: Arthritis patients may take daily (morning and night) one cup of hot water with two tablespoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. When taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured. In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon Cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week (out of the 200 people so treated) practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain — and within a month, most all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis now started walking without pain.

BLADDER INFECTIONS: Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder.

CHOLESTEROL: Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water given to a cholesterol patient was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10 percent within two hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, when taken three times a day, any chronic cholesterol is cured. According to information received in the said Journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complaints of cholesterol.

COLDS: Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for three days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold, and, clear the sinuses.

UPSET STOMACH: Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomach ache and also clears stomach ulcers from its root.
GAS: According to the studies done in India and Japan, it is revealed that when Honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.

IMMUNE SYSTEM: Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacterial and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of Honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles (where DNA is contained) to fight bacterial and viral diseases.

INDIGESTION: Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food is eaten relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals

INFLUENZA: A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural ‘Ingredient’ which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu.

LONGEVITY: Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly, arrests the ravages of old age. Use four teaspoons of honey, one teaspoon of cinnamon powder, and three cups of water and boil to make a tea. Drink 1/4 cup, three to four times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age. Life spans increase and even a 100 year old will start performing the chores of a 20-year-old.

RASPY OR SORE THROAT: When throat has a tickle or is raspy, take one tablespoon of honey and sip until gone. Repeat every three hours until throat is without symptoms.

PIMPLES: Three tablespoons of honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it off the next morning with warm water. When done daily for two weeks, it removes all pimples from the root.

SKIN INFECTIONS:Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin Infections.

WEIGHT LOSS:Daily in the morning one half hour before
breakfast and on an empty stomach, and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one cup of water. When taken regularly, it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also, drinking this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.

CANCER: Recent research in Japan and Australia has revealed that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully. Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder three times a day for one month.

FATIGUE: Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens who take honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts are more alert and flexible. Dr. Milton, who has done research, says that a half tablespoon of honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, even when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, when taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3:00 P.M., the vitality of the body increases within a week.

BAD BREATH: People of South America, gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water first thing in the morning so their breath stays fresh throughout the day.

HEARING LOSS: Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder, taken in equal parts restores hearing. Remember when we were kids? We had toast with real butter and cinnamon sprinkled on it!

Osteoporosis Drugs May Be Linked to Cancer Risk

Original article

Side Effects of Osteoporosis Drugs can Be Far Worse than Brittle Bones…

Osteoporosis drugs have become increasingly well-known for their dangerous side effects, many of which could easily be worse than your original concern.

Acid reflux and related esophageal inflammation were a couple of the side effects that quickly became apparent when these drugs hit the market. This is why you’re instructed to take them with food and avoid lying down shortly after taking them.

But as I predicted over a decade ago, that’s just the beginning of the health nightmare these drugs can bring about.

Since their release, bisphosphonate drugs have also become associated with:

  • Hypocalcemia (blood calcium levels are too low)
  • Serious eye inflammation and possible blindness
  • Severe musculoskeletal pain
  • Stomach ulcers – particularly when taken together with anti-inflammatory drugs.

In one study, 8 percent of participants taking Fosamax and 12 percent of those receiving the anti-inflammatory Naprosyn developed stomach ulcers. But when the two drugs were taken in combination, the rate of stomach ulcers rose to a whopping 38 percent.

This is important, as many elderly, particularly women, are likely to suffer from both arthritis and osteoporosis, increasing the likelihood of bisphosphonates and anti-inflammatory drugs being taken at the same time.

  • Liver damage –Although the mechanism is still unknown, researchers believe drugs like Fosamax may inhibit the synthesis of cholesterol in your liver, which may alter liver function.

Regardless of the mechanism, if you’re taking Fosamax or related bisphosphonate drugs you need to beware of the possibility of liver dysfunction, and your doctor should monitor you properly for it.

  • Kidney failure (renal failure)
  • Atrial fibrillation — Women who have used Fosamax are nearly twice as likely to develop atrial fibrillation (quivering of your heart’s upper chambers), which is the most common kind of chronically irregular heartbeat

One study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that Fosamax was associated with an 86 percent higher risk of atrial fibrillation compared to those who had never used the drug.

Atrial fibrillation can cause palpitations, fainting, fatigue, or congestive heart failure. It can also lead to embolic strokes.

  • Thigh bone (femur) fractures – Although you’ve only started hearing about this recently, the FDA asked Merck (the maker of Fosamax) to “add information about the report of femur fractures” to the medication’s package insert back in 2008, according to an ABC News report.

Sixteen months later they finally added it to the list of fine print side effects, but neither Merck nor the FDA properly informed doctors and patients of this newfound risk.

According to a recent report by a US panel of experts reviewing the evidence of increased risk of unusual femur fractures, 94 percent of patients who had experienced a femur break had been on bisphosphonate drugs. Most of them had taken the drugs longer than five years.

More than half of those who broke their thigh bones had reported groin or thigh pain for a period of weeks or months before fractures occurred.

In addition, “more than a quarter of patients who experienced atypical femur fractures in one leg experienced a fracture in the other leg as well,” Canadian CTV reports.

  • Osteonecrosis of your jaw bone (jaw bone death) — This is a serious condition that can also cause disfiguration as the bone in your jaw dies and begins to decay.

Symptoms include jaw pain, infection, and loosening of your teeth. However, some people experience no symptoms until they suddenly notice exposed bone. If you’ve had teeth extracted, or wear full dentures, you may also be at greater risk.

Interestingly, an animal study published in the June issue of Journal of Bone and Mineral Research concluded that osteonecrosis of the jaw may involve the interaction between bisphosphonate drugs and vitamin D deficiency! As you will see below, optimizing your vitamin D levels is imperative for healthy bones, and this finding further strengthens that recommendation.

Soy and Breast Cancer

Dr. John Johnston
I am commonly asked about soy and its relationship to breast cancer.  Soy is an excellent source of protein and large well designed studies have proven its benefit for the cardiovascular system, bones, and for the relief of Perimenopausal symptoms.  But the burning question that most women have is whether or not they should have soy products, particularly if they have had breast cancer.  Although many studies have shown a decrease in risk of breast cancer with higher soy consumption, there have been studies in laboratories (not humans) that suggest that genistein, a major isoflavone can enhance the proliferation of breast tumor cells.  Another study showed that genistein can promote breast tumor growth in ovariectomized rats.
Soy foods are rich in phytoestrogens, mainly in the form of isoflavones, which are estrogen receptor modulators that have both an estrogenic-like as well as antiestrogenic properties.  Soy constituents have been shown to have anticancer effects, including the inhibition of DNA topoisomerase I and II, proteases, tyrosine kinases, inositol phosphate, and angiogenesis and may boost immune response and possess antioxidant effects.
In December 2009 the Journal of the American Medical Association published an article on soy food intake and breast cancer survival.  It was well designed, and the largest study to date, of over 5,000 female breast cancer survivors.  The conclusion -” Among women with breast cancer, soy food consumption was significantly associated with decreased risk of death and recurrence. “The study went so far as to say that soy food intake may have a comparable effect to tamoxifen on breast cancer outcomes.  The maximum benefit of soy intake for reduction of mortality and recurrence was reached at 11 grams/day.  There was no appreciable benefit beyond this level.
Does the type of soy consumed matter?  Probably. The soy consumed in this study were whole soy foods such as cooked soy beans, edamame, tofu, miso, and soy milk.  In contrast, meat analogs and various processed foods are lower in isoflavones.  Soy supplements should be high quality and organic. I have a great concern about the intake of genetically modified soy.  We may not know the impact of these unnaturally altered soybeans for another generation.  Soy was genetically modified specifically to survive the chemical herbicides that are sprayed over them.  And I have a moral contention with the manner in which certain companies that promote the production of genetically modified soy have overtaken our natural soy farming industry.
Excluding a minority of individuals that may have a soy intolerance, it is my opinion, based on a large and compelling body of evidence provided by legitimate peer reviewed studies, that soy intake is not only safe, but beneficial.
